The studio

Since I've made the official move to Ottawa, I've been spending most of my free time discovering new places, I typically share my outdoor adventures on here, but I've been finding the most interesting spaces around the city. This one in particular I'd mentioned when working with Brittany, this coffee shop called The studio , which is a unique space dedicated towards creativity and good coffee. Basically, it's my dream space. The entire caffee acts as an art gallery as well as a creative working space, in fact they even have art classes and host events in the caffee as well.
I encourage you all to check out thier website and if you happen to be in Ottawa, defnitely pay a visit! The atmosphere is completely inviting and invigorating...it's truly impossible to sit in this caffee and not be inpsired! Thier slogan is "sip, ponder, create." A perfect compilation of words to describe this place!
I definitely plan on sharing more of the exciting places I've been coming across!
I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Brittany Brittany Gushue

Meet Brittany Brittany Gushue, student, artist, model and triumph of eccentricity. I have recently had the lucky pleasure of spending the day with Brittany, observing her naturally while working at her craft in one of her favorite places to manifest her creativity; whilst learning more about her, her art and her plans for the future!

It was a beautiful day when we met, the sun was out and the sky was clear...not a trace of the autumn chill we've been experiencing on most days. We met at "the Studio" a favorite café of Brittany's, which she frequently visits to sip some amazing coffee whilst bringing her creations to life. Though Brittany is currently working on her Bachelor of Arts degree, she still manages to find time to work on her passions: art and modelling.
As an artist, Brittany is inspired by the world around her-she loves incorporating realism and a variety of different perspectives in her art: "I would describe it as pop-art meets realism, Its grounded in reality but I tend to distort that and create my own sense of reality."
From sketching, to painting, to carving, the list goes on and on and Brittany Williams does it all, and does it with singularity and pure passion. Though her work has often been compared to Andy Warhol, her style is unbelievably distinct and resolute, making her art inimitable.

A woman of many talents and passions, Brittany is also working on breaking into the modelling industry. Currently unsigned, she's been working with a variety of different photographers and brands, continuously evolving as a model and using her art and love of fashion as inspiration! Much like her art, her look, though stunning, is unconventional and fiery. If anyone is interested in collaborating with Brittany in regards to art, photography or fashion you can e-mail her here: fearandselfloathing2014@gmail.com

After snapping some photos and emptying a mug of delicious cappuccino, I was able to ask Brittany a few questions:

ME: What daily inspirations do you use in your art?

Brittany: Advertisements is where I get most of my inspiration, I try to pay attention to the subliminal messages that go into everyday advertising as in the posters on store fronts or the posters you see walking down the street, whether it be a billboard or a side of the bus. Overall I tend to draw inspiration from other artists and nature. I think there's this primal connection to nature that us city dwellers often overlook while busy running around in this concrete jungle so to speak.

ME: Do you feel as though the modelling world and art world are connected in any way?

Brittany: I feel yes absolutely, what is modelling if not an art? I think often times it gets degraded as something that a "pretty girl" does but there's a lot more to it than that. I prefer to actually work with visual artists intimately in their space when given the opportunity as a nude model. But I would argue what is beauty if not art? And I’ve seen some beautiful models who have inspired me to re-create their image. So yes, absolutely the modeling world and the art world are connected. And not just on a creation level, often times artists need models to model their art, depending on what their medium is. Fashion is Art.

ME: Who is someone you admire either in the fashion industry or art community whom you would one day like to work with?

Brittany: Hands down in the fashion industry Russell Brand and Kelly Cutrone. I think Russeell Brand and Kelly Cutrone really understand the way the world works and are both super successful, sassy and fashionable. They just got it going on so I would die for an opportunity to work with them one day. On a local level, I really like Cara Tierney's work and think she's got something really special and profound to say.

Emeric Chantier

ÉMERIC CHANTIER is an artist/model-maker currently living in Paris. I'm surely not the only one completely blown away by the labyrinthine beauty demontrated in his art work. The minute I came across him, I knew I had to share and do more research. Unfortunately I could not find much on the process or even on the artist himself, however you can visit his website to view more of his amazing art work and read about him. As the entire site is in french, I have translated a quote from the artist bellow for my readers who are interested in learning more about Emeric Chantier and his beautifulartwork:

"My work is related to nature and its relationship with man, it stands as a comparison to our origins , an environmental awareness on the preciousness of our "mother nature" source of all life, a subject that I truly believe in my heart, should be part of a collective consciousness . However , it seems to me important not to fall into a moralizing , to simply illustrate the holding entity of life and at times confront the productions of man. These sculptures take the form of anatomical parts of the man or his creations that fill his daily so he can identify through them without becoming a target. There are simple poetic narratives that should speak for them - even . It is also important to me to show a work detail and quality, so that the observer after reading the general form , may approach and forget to get lost in a universe teeming with life." -E.C

I always love learning about what inspires artists to create and always find it interesting to see what concepts the artist has brought forth and how similar or different they are from our own upon first viewig these pieces. The connection to nature is very present, however I thought, though laced together, the dinstinction between nature and industrialism quite visible in the models with present man made creations that is. And I wonder, what might that represent? After reading the above quote, Chantier's heart clearly lies with mother nature and its gentle laws. It seems that the distinction is meant to be contrasted so bodly in display. What was -the oposition to- what has become? I'm speaking of course of behalf of the production and nature based models, wihch again you can see on his website. Typical of me to post the more nature-based artwork...My favorite I think is the moss/flower covered face, so beautiful and intricately made. Every root, every plant, individual beings coming together to create a united being. I find it almost a direct reflection of our true selves...we are made from a million tiny universes, alive and growing within us. In almost every model I imagine all those tiny worlds, all those possibilities. Isn't it amazing what art can bring out in us? Emeric Chanter's work is breath taking, inspiring and throught-provoking. I hope you ejoy his work as much as I do! Take a couple of minutes to get lost in it.
